The population of the Northern Virginia localities (dark blue on the map) exceeds that of all the other shaded localities. The cities and counties whose collective population is smaller than Northern Virginia has grown in each decennial census since 1940. This map shows the increased area for each decade since 1940 and for each year since 2010.
